Semi-truck crashes on Augusta Canal Bridge

At around 1:00 in the morning on Friday, December 11, an 18-wheeler crashed on the Augusta Canal Bridge on U.S. Interstate 20. Responding authorities said that the truck hit the side of the bridge and went over into the canal. The driver, identified by the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office as Atlanta resident Eshmon West, sustained critical injuries and was transported by an ambulance to Georgia Regents Medical Center. A report by the Sheriff’s Office Traffic Division said that West fell asleep while driving.

Several lanes on I-20 were shut down following the accident, and Georgia officials began fixing the significant damage on the bridge and guard rail. The outside lane of I-20 Eastbound will remain closed until the repairs are complete.

According to the authorities, the driver of the truck will be cited for failure to maintain lane.
