Studies address safety concerns over unmanned vehicles

People are growing concerned over the recent trend of delivery trucks traveling without a driver.

Assistant Professor Evangelos Theodorou, a robotics specialist at the School of Aerospace Engineering, is currently doing a research on self-driving vehicles in thousands of possible scenarios. Theodorou believes that the world is now interconnected and aerospace engineering research plays a vital part in the development and success of unmanned cars. That said, there are issues of safety that have to be addressed before consumers can actually start using self-driving cars.

Theodorou emphasizes that a growing number agencies are funding research in universities. He is in the process of developing software that can detect problems with the vehicles, such as a flat tire or troubled engine.
